 is fall featured another round of successful regional legislative planning meetings hosted by Mississippi’s Planning and Development Districts (PDDs) across the State  ese meetings are a critical part of our annual legislative planning process  ank you to each districts’ director for their continued support and sponsorship of these meetings
InOctober,ourSmallTownConferencewasheldinOxfordwithover400municipalo cialsinattendance Aspecial thank-you goes out to Mayor Robyn Tannehill and the Oxford Board of Aldermen for their hospitality and sponsorship of a wonderful welcome reception that was held to kick-o  the two day event!
Our Legislative Committee, chaired by Mayor Chuck Cariker of Tunica, met during the Small Town Conference and asked the MML sta  to develop a template resolution in support of the Local Government Debt Collection Act Many of our cities have already passed this resolution which speci es the amount of outstanding municipal  nes each city is owed  e Local Government Debt Collection Act would require the Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR) to withhold unpaid, fully-adjudicated municipal  nes from an individual’s Mississippi State Income Tax Refund  e amount withheld would then be sent to the respective municipalities who have submitted unpaid  nes to DOR, and the assessment added to the  ne would be sent to the State of Mississippi  is bill is a win-win for all MML members, as well as the general fund of the State of Mississippi If your city has not passed the resolution declaring its support of this legislation, please make sure to do so at an upcoming board meeting We need every MML member to support this e ort!
As we get closer to the holidays, the MML sta  is busy  nalizing the agenda for our 2018 Midwinter Legislative Confer- ence to be held January 9-11, 2018, at the Hilton Jackson Please make plans to attend this conference which will include a brie ng at the Mississippi State Capitol from the Legislative leadership, a panel discussion of state and federal agencies o ering grants to municipalities, and updates from statewide elected o cials
Again this year, the MML will be promoting Municipal Government Week in Mississippi January 14-20, 2018  is special week is intended to call attention to and emphasize the valuable services that city governments provide to their citizens on a daily basis that improve the quality of life for the more than 50% of Mississippi citizens who reside within municipal limits Please go to our website at www mmlonline com/news and download the 2018 Municipal Government Week Tool Kit to use as your city plans its special celebrations!
