On the banks of the Chickasawhay River...

Date Posted:
8/16/2010 12:00 PM
Description:
The Town of Enterprise is located on the banks of the Chickasawhay River and during the latter part of the Civil War, the town was the site of the State Capitol for a brief period.  Enterprise also has the distinction of providing one governor for the state, John J. McRae.

Before the Chickasawhay River became filled with logs, trees, and other debris, boats were
operated between Enterprise and Pascagoula, carrying cotton and other merchandise to and  from these two points.  This continued for several years until the boat sank a few miles south of Enterprise.

This river is still in high demand for canoeing, kayaking as well as fishing.  All sorts of artifacts  have been discovered by locals in the river, some dating back to the Civil War.
A fossil bed is one of the interesting places to stop as you float south on the river towards Pachuta.
