City of Natchez, Mississippi

Position Title:  City Planner

Job Description:

Natchez, Mississippi (population about 19,000) has a national reputation as one of America’s most significant historic cities and enjoys a picturesque location on a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.  The only incorporated town in the county, Natchez is 100 miles from Jackson, the state capital; 87 miles from Baton Rouge; and 175 miles from New Orleans.

Natchez has lost much of its manufacturing base, and its industries today are smaller and more diversified with about 15 companies employing from 25 to 375 people.  The city’s economy has become increasingly dependent upon cultural and heritage tourism.  State historic sites and the Natchez National Historical Park are important tourism partners.  The city and county also have wealth of natural resources, including a National Wildlife Refuge.  Natchez is growing as a retirement community and is also attracting part-time residents who are drawn by the historic character, natural beauty, cultural events, and quality of life.

The City of Natchez is seeking an energetic planner to head and direct the Department of City Planning.  A master’s degree is preferred with a strong educational background or experience in historic preservation.  AICP certification is desired or should be obtained within three years.  Salary amount commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate should possess the following:

(1)   Experience in review of subdivision plats, development site plans, and zoning and ordinance administration.

(2)   Ability to interpret and administer zoning regulations, ordinances, and other development-related laws of the city and state; ability to read and understand maps, site plans, and architectural drawings; ability to prepare advisory reports for the Planning and Preservation Commissions.

(3)   Strong customer service skills for assisting citizens, developers, and builders with all aspects of the development process and for enforcing zoning regulations and ordinances politely and uniformly.

(4)   Good organization skills, common sense, and the willingness to be a team player with all branches of city government.

(5)   Strong computer skills

Interested applicants should forward resumes to Donnie Holloway, City Clerk, City of Natchez, 124 S. Pearl Street, Natchez, MS  39120, 601-445-7507 or email resumes to dholloway2@natchez.ms.us no later than January 27, 2010.
