Legislative Advocacy→
The League employs a full-time professional lobbyist along with a governmental affairs coordinator, who works during the legislative session and throughout the year, to promote the interest and issues important to our members. The MML Legislative Committee, along with the League staff, meets with legislators to ensure that they are informed and up to date on the interests of our cities and towns. The League staff closely monitors and tracks any and all bills of municipal concern that are introduced during the session. The MML Legislative Committee meets regularly during the session to provide guidance to the MML staff regarding any legislation of municipal interest.
The City Hall Center →
In 2008, the League created new emphasis on technical and research services by forming the City Hall Center. Through the center, the League staff prepares briefing papers, conducts surveys, archives ordinances and responds to requests for information. Through the center, the League staff has networked with various state agencies and other public and private entities to gather information regarding loan and grant programs, training opportunities and updates on regulatory activities that pertain to municipal governments.
Education & Training →
In recent years, the League has greatly enhanced and improved education efforts with the implementation of the Certified Municipal Officials' program, which provides specialized training for municipal elected officials. In addition to the CMO program, the League hosts regional trainings, annual education conferences, and other training opportunities for local officials. Awards and Scholarships
The Mississippi Municipal League Excellence Awards program recognizes cities and towns for meeting the challenges of municipal government through innovative problem solving, excellence in management, citizen participation and striving to provide a higher level of service. Each year, awards are given in the areas of public safety, planning and economic development and city spirit. Winners are chosen by a committee of judges outside of the MML and are recognized at the MML Annual Conference. [Download the 2010 Excellence Awards Application PDF]
The Mississippi Municipal League Municipal Hall of Fame recognizes elected mayors and board members who have served at least 20 years. The induction ceremony is held each year at the MML Annual Conference. [Download Honoree Application PDF]
The League Educational Training Scholarship (L.E.T.S.) gives cities and towns with a population of 5,000 or under the opportunity to apply for assistance in attending the Small Town Conference, the Mid-Winter Conference or the Annual Conference. Each year the League and the Mississippi Association of Clerks and Collectors fund scholarships to pay registration fees for these conferences. Applicants must meet specific criteria to be considered.
The MML High School Scholarship Program provides three scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each for high school seniors in Mississippi who plan to attend an accredited community college, college or university in Mississippi. One is open to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities and to high school seniors working part-time for a member municipality of the Mississippi Municipal League and is sponsored by Phelps Dunbar. A second Limited Scholarship is being offered for the first time this year by the Mississippi Municipal Service Company and is open to children or grandchildren of employees or elected officials of Mississippi municipalities that are members of the MMSC Liability Plan or the Workers Compensation Group.
