Inspector I,II

This is skilled inspectional work in enforcing the International Code Council codes and other related codes and ordinances.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing both office and field inspectional work to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector or other superior and requires making decisions using technical discretion, judgment and familiarity with a variety of building construction and repair.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Makes inspections of old and new building structures, swimming pools and other appurtenances to ensure that structure meets approved plans, building, fire and other applicable codes and ordinances; performs commercial and residential plan reviews as needed to complete inspections; meets with architects, engineers, and contractors;  requires corrections to be made when deficiencies are discovered; assists builders and owners in determining how to make such corrections to achieve code conformance; gives information on building requirements; inspects old and dangerous structures, especially for fire or safety hazards; completes damage assessments from storms and other natural disasters; checks sites of demolished buildings for compliance to city requirements; makes assigned inspections of a residence including foundation, roof, chimneys, floors, walls, ceiling, doors, windows, lighting, outlets, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and ventilation; writes a detailed report on inspections; may make inspections for plumbing or electrical codes; operates a computer to retrieve and enter inspection data; follows-up on complaints from contractors, owners, and citizens; schedules inspection routes for efficiency; operates vehicles safely; performs related work as required.

Requirements

Candidates must have experience in all areas of residential and commercial construction with strong emphasis on electrical systems. A master’s license in electrical is preferred or equivalent training and experience. A minimum of 10 years of construction experience is desired. Candidate must have the ability to obtain ICC certifications and must work well in a team environment with good communication skills and capable of quality customer service. This position is under the direct supervision of the Chief Building Official but requires the candidate to be self-motivated and able to function with limited supervision.
