Description Summary

A Dispatch Supervisor in a law enforcement agency is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the dispatch or communication center. The role involves managing a team of dispatchers ensuring that emergency and non-emergency calls are handled efficiently and maintaining effective communication between the public and law enforcement personnel.

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following duties. Additional essential functions maybe identified by the city and listed as such in the incumbent's performance appraisal elements. Various tasks may be assigned under each essential function. Those that are listed under the examples of work are not all inclusive; they are examples only and may be amended or added to as needed by the police department.

 

 

Examples of Work

Examples of work performance in this classification include, but are no limited to, the following tasks. These tasks may be amended, or other tasks may be assigned as necessary.

 

  • Supervise and manage the activities of dispatchers, call takers, and communications personnel during shifts.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to dispatch staff, fostering a positive and professional work environment.
  • Assign tasks, create shift schedules, and ensure appropriate staffing levels to handle call volume and workload.
  • Conduct roll calls, briefings, and debriefings with dispatch personnel to share relevant updates and information.
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating ethical behavior, effective communication, and strong decision-making
  • Address performance issues, provide constructive feedback, and recommend training or disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Ensure that dispatchers maintain professional standards, provide accurate information, and follow up on calls and communications.
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate training programs for new and existing dispatch
  • Evaluate the performance of dispatchers and provide feedback, coaching, and additional training as needed.

 

  • Ensure dispatchers adhere to department policies, procedures, and standard operating guide­ lines

 

  • Maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations regarding communications and emergency response systems (e.g., National Incident Management System (NIMS), Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations)

 

  • Serve as the liaison between the communications center and field personnel, command staff, and other law enforcement agencies.

 

  • Manage and oversee dispatch activities during major incidents, critical situations, or high­ priority calls.

Supervisor Responsibilities

Will supervise all personnel on his or her shift by preparing and maintaining detailed reports, logs, and other documentation regarding shift activities, incidents, and personnel performance.

Skills required

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team of dispatch

 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting effectively with dispatch staff, law enforcement personnel, and the public.

 

  • Ability to monitor communications and reports for accuracy and compliance with

 

  • Familiarity with dispatch software, radio systems, and other communication

 

  • Capable of resolving disputes and addressing performance issues

 

The dispatch supervisor is a vital position in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the communications center. By overseeing day-to-day operations, providing guidance and support to dispatchers, and maintaining high standards of communication, the dispatch supervisor plays a key role in the overall success of law enforcement and public safety operations. Their ability to coordinate resources, manage personnel, and respond to incidents is essential in maintaining a well-functioning dispatch center.

 

Education and Experience

 

High school graduate or equivalent and must have worked in some type of experience or a supervisory role in a dispatch center.

 

Abilities

  • Able to lead, mentor, and motivate a team of dispatchers, promoting professionalism and high performance
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and professional management of privileged
  • Able to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relations as required by work

  • Able to identify problems evaluating options, and implementing effective solutions, especially in dynamic and high-stress environments.

 

 

Other Requirements

Have and maintain valid driver's license.

Have and maintain a certification as a dispatcher.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk, stand and occasionally move objects up to 10 pounds found in office

  • Ability to interact with dispatch staff and the public on a day-to-day

 

Work Environment

The work environment is in a dispatch center within the police department.
