Building Inspector/Code Enforcement

DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING AND DEVELOPMENT 

The Building Inspector is a full-time or part-time position in the Department of Building and Development. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Building Official. The person in this position is supervised on a daily basis and has no supervisory authority. The Building Inspector works regular hours, with occasional overtime and night work when the workload demands it. The person in this position is only on call in emergencies. This position requires work both indoor and outdoor, in various weather conditions.  Physical work may be required. There may be exposure to chemicals and other hazardous materials.

Duties and Responsibilities

Perform technical construction and other inspection work.  Perform final inspections and approve occupancy permits.  Review commercial and residential plans for compliance with model building codes.  Advise property owners and contractors on matters relevant to construction and repair methods and materials.  Verify planned occupancy, and inspect grading and parking areas.  Receive and investigate violations of building codes, and complaints on health and safety hazards.

Enforce City code enforcement functions, handle the abatement of dilapidated structures, and assist in performance of asbestos inspections.  Research property records to find owners of land, obtain authorization for demolishing dilapidated structures, maintain detailed documentation with property owners, and coordinate with City Clerk to mail applicable notices.  In addition, this individual will perform other duties as directed that are in the best interest of the City of Canton.

Qualifications 

The person in this position must have a valid driver’s license.  A high school or equivalent is required, and vocational training is recommended.  At least 5 years experience in this or a related field is strongly recommended.

  • Standard building codes and knowledge of construction areas
    • Building industry and construction techniques
    • Types of materials used for buildings
    • OSHA standards and regulations strongly recommended
    • Basic mathematical and computer skills
    • General functions and operations of municipal government is recommended
  • Read and interpret site plans and blueprints
    • Work as a team member with other employees
    • Communicate effectively with residents, elected officials, other City employees, etc.
    • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions
