MML Conferences
The MML sponsors four major conferences each year which include well-known speakers, a variety of educational workshops, state agency updates, awards and recognition programs and the election of MML of cers.
2017 MID-WINTER LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE
January 10 – 12, 2017 ∙ Jackson, MS
The 2017 Mid-Winter Legislative Conference gave the more than 600 attendees, including local municipal of cials from across the state, members of the legislature, and state agency directors and staff, an opportunity to network with members of the legislature early in the session in hopes of promoting municipal-friendly legislation and sti ing any proposed bills that would be unfavorable for municipalities across the state.. The League provided bus transportation to the Capitol on the morning of Wednesday, January 11th for the Annual “MML Day at the Capitol,” where MML members attended a Legislative Brie ng where they were addressed by leaders from the Capitol. Immediately following the legislative brie ng, the League held a press conference in an effort to publicize MML’s 2017 legislative priorities, as well as make a special announcement regarding Mississippi Municipal Government Week. In addition to the events held at the Capitol, the conference featured two general sessions where attendees were able to hear from Sumner Davis, Center Head of the Center for Government & Community Development with the MSU Extension Service regarding the “Do’s and Don’ts of Your Last Year in Of ce,” participate in the “MML Capitol Gang” panel discussion featuring political reporters Sam Hall of the Clarion Ledger; Bobby Harrison of the Daily Journal; and Emily Wagster-Pettus of the Associated Press, and hear updates from the Mississippi Insurance Department, Mississippi Treasury Department, Mississippi Of ce of the Attorney General, and the Mississippi Of ce of the Secretary of State.
10TH ANNUAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
March 3 – 4, 2017 ∙ Cleveland, MS
After 10 years of successful Summits, the Mississippi Municipal League proudly presented the 10th Annual Youth Leadership Summit during the  rst weekend of March at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. Over 250 students in grades 9th – 12th kicked-off their weekend with a Welcome Reception at GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi hosted by the City of Cleveland. The following day, students attended workshops on the campus of Delta State University that focused on topics such as discovering qualities of leadership, transitioning from high school to college, practicing social media etiquette, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and recognizing the importance of a quality  rst impression. Several of the sessions were led by Mayors’ Youth Councils from across the state, including those from Greenville, McComb, Gulfport and Hattiesburg. The conference keynote address was given by former Horn Lake Mayor’s Youth Council President Cole Bostick, and the Summit concluded with TJohnE Productions and featured a game show in which the students were able to answer questions about leadership development in a team effort using audience response technology.
